British Columbia Serving It Right Practice Test

The situation with an aggressive guest can escalate quickly, so a server's best approach is to remain calm and try to defuse the situation. By staying composed, the server is more likely to communicate effectively and prevent the encounter from worsening. Techniques such as active listening, maintaining a non-threatening posture, and speaking in a calm tone can help in de-escalating the tension.

If the situation does not improve or if the guest continues to be aggressive, involving security is the appropriate next step. Security personnel are trained to handle such situations and can take the necessary actions to ensure the safety of both the staff and other guests. This method not only addresses the immediate concern but also maintains a safe and pleasant environment for everyone in the establishment.

In contrast, confronting the guest assertively could provoke further aggression, and ignoring the guest would likely allow the situation to escalate unchecked. Calling for backup immediately might seem like a viable option, but it is often more effective to first attempt to resolve the situation calmly before escalating to involving additional personnel.
